A Microdot is a miniature metal particle of selectable size ranging from 150µm to 1000µm (1mm). Their shape may also be selected as per requirement. Just about any surface can be covered with a wide range of counterfeit proof security elements, including holographic. The surface of Microdots may include ‘engraved’ variable alphanumeric or other codes. Microdots in essence carrie 3 types of basic information:
The Microdots shape is the first immediate information, which shows the genuineness of the micro particles. Microdots of a bigger size (around the 1mm) can be identified by a human eye. With smaller sizes the shape can be seen by a magnifying glass or a microscope. Microdots can be produced in wide range of geometrical shapes, starting with a circle up to many different polygons. The shape can be also an abstract shape such as butterfly or a key. More complex shapes are in themselves an important security element as their production is a very hard to access technologically for any would be counterfeiter.
The surface of Microdots can be ‘engraved’ with alphanumeric variable information. The simplest one may be a number. This means that each micro particle has its own unique number. Other possibilities include the use of text, alphanumerical codes or graphical information such as a signature. From practical point of view there is not much merit in having each particle with different number or code, but in batches with the same code. A good example is a spray canister containing 5,000 Microdots, each dot with same code. The ability to supply each batch with different code on the surface of Microdots substantially expands the possibilities of utilization and uses for security applications. Another option is to have an alphanumeric or a very simple graphics perforated through the surface.
